Hitachi's L-8800 amino acid analyser offers high speed operation at picomole (pmol) detection levels. A newly designed reaction column, featuring a special 3 µm ion exchange resin, leads to high accuracy separation and allows high speed analysis to take place. The L-8800 is designed for automatic on-line mixing of the ninhydrin reagent used in the detection cycle. This overcomes the relative instability of ninhydrin which limits the useful lifetime of pre-mixed ninhydrin/acetate buffer to approximately two weeks.
